There’s a great coaching story told by a man who visited a country store. On the porch was an old dog, whimpering at his master’s feet. The gentleman nodded to the dog’s owner and asked, “What’s wrong with your dog?” The owner replied, “He’s layin’ on a nail.” Logic prevailed and the gentleman asked, “Well why doesn’t he just move?” The answer? “It don’t hurt him enough yet!”
Forget those New Year’s resolutions. There’s a better way to approach a new day, a new year, take a different path. Turning the page doesn’t require a date change. But there is a prerequisite or two.
Your life’s journey is just that – it’s YOURS and it’s a JOURNEY. It is composed of one moment at a time, hour by hour, day by day. How you chose to fill your time, spend your money, the people you choose to associate with, your career, your place of residence, and yes, your attitude toward ALL of it. It’s all YOURS for the choosing.
In working with those in career transition and transitions of any kind, the BIGGEST hurdle is making the DECISION to move beyond the shock, hurt, pain and misery – to accept the fork in the road and decide to forge a new path. It’s a huge step but embracing the change is essential for progress.
In Seth Godin’s January 4, 2012 blog he poses an interesting question: “What do you make?” The answer? DECISIONS! “Your job is to make decisions.” Whether you realize it or not, you make them every day. Making no choice at all is still a decision.
Sometimes you just have to get out of your own way. You become seduced into the comfort zone of status quo, which is okay. It isn’t great, but it’s safe. Perhaps you’ve held onto this mode or pattern for good reason. But eventually, it no longer serves you well. It’s time to break through, move on and move up. Or MOVE OVER while life passes you by! Whatever is holding you back has become a bad habit and is preventing you from real growth, progress and PROSPERITY!
“Every time you are afraid, your life is presenting you with an opportunity to make a leap of faith,” (Martha Beck). If something makes you uncomfortable, it’s a sure sign that there’s an opportunity for growth there. You must decide whether to avoid it, run from it, confront it, or work through it. “Look at every path closely and deliberately. Try it as many times as you think necessary. Then ask yourself, and yourself alone….Does this path have a heart? If it does, the path is good. If it doesn’t, it is of no use,” Carlos Castaneda.
DECIDE today! GO! “The moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision which no one could have dreamed would have come their way,” W. H. Murray
I’m reminded of my favorite quote from the movie, Steel Magnolias: “I’d rather have thirty minutes of wonderful than a lifetime of nothing special.” Just DO IT. Get up off the porch and leave the nail behind. Then watch how the world will support your every move and effort!
